To preserve, protect, and perpetuate Middlesboro Jewish Cemetery as a sacred burial ground that upholds Jewish traditions of kavod hamet (honoring the deceased), provides dignified final resting places for Jewish individuals and families, and maintains this historic site as a living testament to Jewish heritage in Southeastern Kentucky.

We envision a beautifully maintained, fully documented cemetery where every grave is cared for with reverence, where descendants can connect with their ancestry, and where the Jewish community of the Cumberland Gap region — past, present, and future — finds a permanent home of remembrance and peace.

Our History

When Jewish merchants, physicians, and coal industry workers arrived in Middlesboro during the late 19th century boom, they brought with them the need for consecrated ground aligned with halachic burial practices. Land along Hebrew Road was dedicated circa 1890, becoming one of the few Jewish cemeteries in the Appalachian region. Through two world wars, the decline of coal mining, and decades of demographic change, dedicated families and volunteers kept the gates open and the grounds tended. Today, Middlesboro Jewish Cemetery stands as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ensuring this sacred trust endures for generations to come.

Perpetual Care & Groundskeeping

Our perpetual care program ensures every plot receives year-round maintenance including mowing, leaf removal, tree trimming, and pathway upkeep along Hebrew Road. Seasonal plantings of perennials and the installation of erosion-control measures protect headstones from shifting soil common in the Cumberland foothills. Families who purchase perpetual care certificates gain peace of mind that their loved ones' resting places will be tended in perpetuity, regardless of whether descendants remain in the region.

Monument Restoration & Preservation

Many of our earliest markers date to the 1890s and bear inscriptions in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English. Our restoration team stabilizes leaning headstones, cleans biological growth without damaging stone, and documents inscriptions before they weather further. We follow National Park Service cemetery preservation guidelines adapted for Jewish monuments, including respect for matzevah orientation and the prohibition against disturbing remains during repair work.

Genealogy & Burial Records Archive

We maintain a growing digital and physical archive of burial records, plot maps, and family correspondence spanning five generations. Researchers and descendants can request record lookups to locate ancestors, verify burial dates, and obtain documentation for genealogical societies. Our volunteers have partnered with JewishGen and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies to index more than 340 burials recorded at Middlesboro Jewish Cemetery.

Memorial Services & Yahrzeit Support

We coordinate annual memorial gatherings before High Holidays and on Yom HaShoah, providing prayer books, kippot, and a portable aron when needed. Our yahrzeit notification service sends annual reminders to registered families on the Hebrew calendar anniversary of their loved one's passing. For families unable to travel to Middlesboro, volunteers can place stones, recite Kaddish, and send photographs of the gravesite on request.

Environmental Stewardship Initiative

The cemetery's mature oak and maple canopy provides habitat for native birds and helps prevent soil erosion on our hillside terrain. Our environmental program manages invasive species, plants native wildflowers along the perimeter fence, and maintains a chemical-free zone within 50 feet of all gravesites. We are working toward certification as a Green Burial Council-aligned site, offering natural burial options consistent with Jewish law and ecological responsibility.

Spring Restoration Project Completes 14 Monument Stabilizations

Our volunteer preservation team completed its most ambitious spring yet, stabilizing fourteen headstones dating from 1892 to 1924. Using lime mortar consistent with original construction methods, the team worked under guidance from a certified cemetery conservator. Families of those interred were notified and invited to attend dedication ceremonies at each restored site.

More than sixty visitors from five states attended our annual heritage tour, which traces the history of Jewish merchants, physicians, and coal industry workers in the Cumberland Gap region.
